Brazilian Betting Inquiry Faces Deadline as Extension Unlikely
Time is running short for the parliamentary inquiry commission (CPI) investigating betting practices in Brazil.
Senate President Davi Alcolumbre is reportedly against extending the CPI’s deadline, believing sufficient time has been allocated for compiling a report. The committee has been examining the Brazilian gambling market for over seven months.
Established last November, the CPI on betting aimed to investigate the “growing influence of online virtual gambling games on [Brazilian families’ financial spending]”.
The CPI has since investigated key issues within the Brazilian gambling sector, including illegal betting, influencer advertising, and retrospective grey market taxes predating the legal market launch on January 1st.
Initially scheduled to conclude on April 30th, the deadline was previously extended to June 14th.
However, a further extension appears improbable. Senator Jorge Kajuru revealed Alcolumbre’s frustration with the CPI’s perceived lack of progress.
“President Davi slammed his hand on the table,” Kajuru stated, as reported by a local news source.
“That was the only time he got angry and said ‘I do not accept the extension, that’s it, it’s over, and I will claim that you did not work, that you did not hold more sessions and did not call the people you should have called and you want to continue with this situation, which is sometimes even a circus’.”
Has the Betting CPI Been Effective?
The betting CPI has addressed several crucial issues, and its final report could potentially play a significant role in addressing concerns surrounding the gambling sector.
However, the CPI has also faced controversy. Allegations of extortion within the committee surfaced in December, prompting rapporteur Senator Soraya Thronicke to denounce the “gossip” as a distraction from the CPI’s work.
Senator Cleitinho Azevedo also drew criticism recently when he requested a photo with influencer Virgínia Fonseca during her testimony to the CPI regarding her promotion of betting sites on social media.
Thronicke subsequently criticized Cleitinho’s actions and expressed skepticism regarding Fonseca’s testimony, also criticizing the influencer’s demeanor.
