Montevideo City Hall to Investigate Casino Employees for Irregularities

The General Directorate of Human Resources and Materials Management of the Montevideo City Hall (IMM) has announced that it will initiate an administrative investigation into three employees of the Casino Service. The investigation stems from alleged irregularities detected at the Parque Hotel Casino in Parque Rodó.

This development is the latest chapter concerning the future of the Parque Hotel Casino in Montevideo, amidst Mayor Mario Bergara’s desire to transfer the management of the establishment to national authorities. Furthermore, the new municipal administration has begun a cost reduction plan for the casino, starting with a salary reduction for the municipal casino manager, and suggesting a potential reduction in the workforce.

Investigation Details

The IMM’s investigation is based on video recordings, which revealed possible irregular behavior by the three employees. They are accused of violating established protocols for handling money. According to the report, two incidents occurred in the casino’s conversion and sales cage in April, recorded at 13:04 and 13:39 hours. These incidents resulted in a financial loss of UYU 11,000 (USD 271), an amount that was not paid to a customer.

The resolution to investigate was adopted with the endorsement of the Legal Advisory Division and communicated to the various departments of the city government. The case remains open for further investigation by the Summary Unit.

Context and Controversy

The investigation unfolds amid the controversy generated by Bergara’s statements upon assuming office, where he expressed his wish to transfer the casino’s management to the General Directorate of Casinos of Uruguay, which belongs to the Ministry of Economy. The controversy began after the IMM presented its financial report, which showed that the Parque Hotel Casino in the Uruguayan capital recorded a deficit of UYU 87 million (more than USD 2.1 million) in 2023.

Calls for Closure

Meanwhile, Deputy Martín Lema, who also ran for mayor of Montevideo, continues to assert that the best course of action is to close the establishment. During his campaign, he had also indicated that the casino’s continued operation was not viable.
