Committee Debate on State Participations

Last Thursday, the standing committee on Finance dedicated time to a committee debate on state participations. During the discussion, the Dutch Lottery became a focal point. It became clear that several members of parliament lacked awareness of gambling legislation and current policies.

The State Secretary, Tjebbe van Oostenbruggen, announced that a ban on online gambling advertisements on television, in newspapers, and on the radio will take effect from July 1st. Henk de Vree, a member of parliament, inquired whether this would also include the STER commercials (public broadcasting commercials). Van Oostenbruggen confirmed that STER commercials for online gambling would indeed disappear from July 1st.

Dutch Lottery’s Annual Figures

A few days before the committee debate, the Dutch Lottery announced its annual figures for 2024. The state participation’s turnover decreased from €6.4 billion to €6.1 billion, but the net turnover increased due to lower payouts.

Notably, there was a change in the annual report compared to previously published reports. The 2024 annual report no longer mentioned the net turnover of TOTO Online. The gambling company only shared the total net turnover of the Dutch Lottery without specifying the different brands. According to the Dutch Lottery, this choice was made because it concerns commercially sensitive information.
