Mikal Tseggai served during the two -in -the -day debate in the Lower House () and Willem Koops A motion about the visibility of online casinos in Google. The MPs want the renewed gambling legislation to be banned for gambling sites to advertise or be visible in Google as long as the Gaming Authority has not given permission for this. A ‘Whitelist’ should ensure that only reliable permit holders can advertise in Google.

The room,

heard the deliberation,

Whereas consumers must be allowed and transmitted as much as possible to the legal gambling offer and that a full advertising ban could turn out productively for this;

believe that gambling providers should not get a advertising space unless they are
Provided reliable and involved drawing up in compliance with the rules on the duty of care;

The government requests a ban on advertising and making gambling websites in the new law on the games of chance, unless the Gaming Authority has certified a provider as a reliable organization, the so -called Whitelisting, on the basis of a careful screening.

And proceeds to the order of the day.

Whitelist already exists

Nevertheless, since the introduction of the Gambling Act, there have been frequent advertisements for illegal online casinos. A Google spokesperson says that there will always be parties who try to circumvent the processes of Google.

However, the tech giant is constantly busy removing the undisputed gambling advertisements (and other prohibited content). For example, in 2023 no fewer than 5.5 billion advertisements were removed because they had violated the Google guidelines. Of these, 192.7 million came from the ‘Gambling and Games’ category, as can be read in the ADS Safety Report 2023.

Abuse of the advertising network

The majority of the advertisements (1.04 billion) was removed because the users had abused the advertising network. This also includes the advertisements where it seems as if advertising is being made for website A while users are forwarded to website B, for example an illegal gambling site.

Google also deleted illegal gambling advertisements earlier this month

The illegal gambling commercials in Google were already mentioned last month during the round table discussion and the commission debate on games of chance in the Lower House. Following this, the Responsible Affiliates quality mark sent a letter to Google’s European headquarters to inform the tech giant about Dutch legislation in the field of games of chance and advertising for games of chance.

Not much later, a search in Google showed that the observed gambling advertisements had disappeared in popular search terms such as ‘online casino’ and ‘online gambling’. It was not long before there were parties who also managed to circumvent the new rules. These advertisements have also been removed, but it seems a matter of time before a new path has been found by the illegal online casinos and their affiliates.
