Brazilian Senate Committee on Sports Betting Faces Deadline
Time appears to be running out for the special committee in Brazil investigating the sports betting industry. Senate President Davi Alcolumbre is reportedly unwilling to extend the committee’s mandate, believing they have had ample time to produce a report. The committee has been examining the Brazilian sports betting market for over seven months.
The committee was established in November of last year to investigate the “growing influence of virtual gambling on the financial well-being of Brazilian families.”
Since then, the committee has investigated key issues within the Brazilian sports betting sector, including illegal betting operations, advertising practices by social media influencers, and retroactive taxes related to the unregulated market prior to its legalization on January 1st.
The committee’s initial deadline was April 30th, but it was extended to June 14th.
However, a further extension is not expected. Senator Jorge Kajuru revealed that Alcolumbre is frustrated with the committee’s perceived lack of progress.
According to local news outlet reports, Kajuru quoted Alcolumbre as saying:
“I will not accept an extension. It’s over. I will argue that you haven’t worked, haven’t held enough sessions, haven’t called the people you should have called, and you want to continue with this situation, which is sometimes even a circus.”

The committee addressed several important issues. Its final report could play a crucial role in resolving some of the concerns surrounding the sports betting industry.
However, the committee’s work was not without controversy. In December, reports emerged alleging extortion within the committee. This prompted the committee’s rapporteur, Senator Soraya Thronicke, to dismiss the “gossip” as an attempt to distract from the committee’s work.
Senator Cleitinho Azevedo also caused a stir when he requested a photo with influencer Virgínia Fonseca during her testimony before the committee regarding her promotion of betting sites on social media.
Thronicke later criticized Azevedo’s actions and expressed skepticism about Fonseca’s testimony, also criticizing the influencer’s behavior.
