The government in the United Kingdom has started a consultation on simplifying the structure for online gambling tax. The proposal involves the replacement of three separate taxes by one uniform levy: the Remote Betting & Gaming Duty.

On April 28, the British Ministry of Finance and HMRC It is known that they have started a joint consultation to replace the current three -part division in gambling tax for online providers with one tax system. The consultation is part of the intention, which was previously announced in the October budget, to modernize and simplify the taxation on online gambling.

The proposal means that the General Betting Duty (21%), Pool Betting Duty (15%) in Remote Gaming Duty (15%) are merged into a single tax: the Remote Betting & Gaming Duty (RBGD).

This new gambling tax would apply to all gambling offered remotely to players in the UK, regardless of the platform used. A specific tax rate has not yet been established.

According to the government, the British online gambling market has grown by more than 200% in ten years. In the year until March 2024, the gross gambling yield of legal online casinos was £ 6.9 billion (€ 8.1 billion), accounting for 44% of the total market. In the same period, the number of physical branches of gambling companies fell by almost a third.

The consultation also investigates whether promotional bonuses such as Free Bets and Free Spins should now be treated equally for tax purposes, and whether spread betting must fall within the scope of the RBGD. The current registration and enforcement procedures remain largely unchanged.

The consultation runs until Monday, July 21, 2025, Next.io knows how to report. If approved and technically feasible, the new tax scheme can come into effect in October 2027.

Uniform rate Gaming tax in the Netherlands

Compared to the United Kingdom, where various tax rates apply to various forms of online games of chance, the Netherlands has a uniform rate that applies to all legal gambling providers.

This means that no distinction is made between different types of games of chance, such as bets or casino games, regarding the tax rate.

As of January 1, 2025, the rate of Dutch gambling tax has been increased from 30.5% to 34.2%, with a further increase to 37.8% planned for January 1, 2026.
