Aleksa Pavicevic Wins $6.1 Million at Triton Poker Series Montenegro

Home player Aleksa Pavicevic won the $200,000 Invitational at the Triton Poker Series in Montenegro for over $6.1 million. Pavicevic needed some luck, especially in a bizarre hand with three players remaining.

While Dutch players often participate in the Triton Poker Series, they haven’t appeared at the current edition in Montenegro. However, hundreds of other poker enthusiasts are present for the prestigious tournaments.

The series began last week with the 201st tournament in Triton Poker history, the $25,000 WPT Global Slam. Xuan Liu made history by becoming the first female player to win a Triton Poker title, along with a top prize of $860,000.

$200,000 Invitational

The Triton Poker Series featured a $200,000 Invitational, where non-professional participants could invite a professional poker player. The event was a success, with 48 pairs of players, resulting in 96 entries at the start.

An additional 37 re-entries were added before the start of the second day, bringing the total field to 123 players. This created a total prize pool of $26.6 million, a record for Triton Poker’s Invitational tournaments. The majority of the prize money was awarded on Wednesday at an epic final table filled with non-professional poker players.

Javid Ismayilov and Aleksa Pavicevic, both with limited tournament poker experience, dominated the final day, creating a spectacle with remarkable plays. Thomas Santerne (ninth, $617,000), Joni Jouhkimainen (eighth, $774,000), and Ramin Hajiyev (seventh, $1,053,000) couldn’t compete.

A Bizarre Hand Helps Pavicevic

Maher Nouira finished in sixth place for $1,423,000, while Taylor Von Kriegenbergh had to settle for fifth place for $1,835,000. With four players remaining, Eric Wasserson was in a good position to double against Aleksa Pavicevic with ace-five against queen-five.

However, chip leader Pavicevic hit a queen, eliminating Wasserson in fourth place for $2,287,000. With Seth Davies having the shortest stack, a heads-up match between Pavicevic and Ismayilov seemed likely. However, the first hand after Wasserson’s exit featured one of the most bizarre hands of the year.

Within a minute, the two largest stacks had their chips in the middle in a massive cooler: pocket kings against pocket aces. Pavicevic, with only one big blind more, seemed to lose his excellent starting position. However, he hit a king on the turn, giving Ismayilov one of the worst bad beats ever, with a significant prize difference between third, second, and first place.

The king on the turn resulted in him finishing third for $2,793,000, while Pavicevic started the heads-up match against Davies with a huge chip lead. The American didn’t give up and quickly doubled three times. Just when he thought he was about to reach even stacks, things went wrong.

With K♦3♦ on 7♥K♦3♠A♥T♥, Davies seemed to be in a good position. On the river, the Montenegrin went all-in, and Davies eventually called with two pair. Pavicevic, however, had a better hand with 5♥2♥, making a flush to secure the Triton Poker title and the corresponding top prize of $6,180,000.

Davies, who won his first title earlier this week, received $4,190,000 as a consolation prize for his second-place finish.
