Uruguayan President Visits Cipriani Ocean Resort & Casino Construction Site

Uruguayan President Luis Lacalle Pou toured the construction site of the former San Rafael hotel, where the Cipriani Ocean Resort Residences & Casino is being built, accompanied by businessman Giuseppe Cipriani. Maldonado officials have confirmed that the establishment will open in 2025.

During the visit, the President stated that the project is “impressive” and highlighted that “more than 550 people are working directly” on this project.

He also recalled the process that began during the previous term of Mayor Enrique Antía with the purchase of the property and the hotel, the procedures that were carried out, the pandemic in between, and the start of an investment that many people questioned its viability.

Lacalle Pou affirmed, “You have to see the number of people working, the quality of the work, and the progress it has made.”

He indicated that the building’s condition of the hotel “was very difficult to recover” and that a replica of the San Rafael is now being carried out and “what was promised is being fulfilled.” “It will be an emblematic place,” he said.

For his part, the General Director of Administration and HR of Maldonado, Miguel Abella, anticipated that the hotel casino will be launched in December of next year and that there are about 77 weeks of work left until its inauguration.

He also pointed out that it was one of the most discussed projects during these 10 years of government, but that today “reality shows that the hotel will be rebuilt as it was.” In addition, he emphasized the importance that the establishment will have for tourism and the department.

Meanwhile, the General Director of Urban Planning, Soledad Laguarda, who also visited the construction, explained that the structure of the hotel, the convention hall, and the casino are already ready, as well as finished floors. At the basement level, where the parking lot is located, the works are almost completed.

She also detailed that the company has already started piloting the first tower, which will have 45 floors and about 260 meters, and that the iron they have bought is the same as that used in the construction of the Eiffel Tower. The execution deadlines are adequate and the workers are doing it in double shifts, she added.

Finally, Lagarda reported that the company plans to assign more personnel as the construction of the hotel progresses, with the aim of raising one slab per week to speed up the process.
