German Lottery Winner on Trial for Attempted Murder of Husband
Patricia S., a German woman who won €1.2 million in the lottery in 2018, is currently on trial in Munich for allegedly plotting to have her husband murdered. The prosecution claims that she, along with her daughter and her daughter’s boyfriend, attempted to arrange the murder to gain access to his wealth. The plot was exposed after the murder attempt failed.
The 58-year-old, from an affluent suburb of Munich, apparently did not enjoy her jackpot winnings for long. Within five years of winning the lottery, the entire €1.2 million had reportedly vanished due to her extravagant lifestyle. Prosecutors allege that she tried to maintain her luxurious lifestyle through involvement in online fraud, including selling counterfeit goods such as Dior handbags on eBay.
When these activities proved insufficient to finance her lifestyle, Patricia S. allegedly decided to have her wealthy husband killed. The couple was already in the midst of a divorce. The woman allegedly sent her 29-year-old daughter, Cindy W., to Bulgaria with €20,000 to hire a hitman. The final payment for the murder was to be €50,000, according to reports.
The alleged murder weapon, an 850-gram axe, was reportedly purchased by Patricia S. herself. In February 2024, the attacker struck when the victim left his villa in the evening for a walk. The man was struck three times on the head with the axe and then stabbed with a knife. However, he survived the attack, despite suffering serious head injuries.
In addition to Patricia S., her daughter Cindy W., the daughter’s boyfriend, and the alleged hitman, Radi S. (33), are also on trial. The defendants have so far remained silent during the trial. Patricia S.’s ex-husband is expected to be heard as a witness. The verdict is expected in early July. The lottery winner faces a life sentence if convicted of plotting the murder.
