Potential New Casino in Ancud, Chile Sparks Economic Optimism

The Chilean Superintendency of Casinos (SCJ) recently announced that Sociedad Mirador Hueihuén S.A., owned by Corporación Meier, is the sole bidder for a license to establish a casino in Ancud, a city on Chiloé Island in the Los Lagos region.

Currently, the only operating casino in Chiloé is located in Castro and is run by Enjoy, a company that chose not to participate in this bidding process. If the Meier Group’s bid is successful, Ancud would join the network of 26 authorized casinos in Chile.

The SCJ has initiated the Technical Offer Evaluation phase, which is expected to conclude within a maximum of 120 days, no later than Monday, November 24, 2025.

Local leaders and authorities in Ancud have expressed enthusiasm about the potential economic benefits of a new casino in the city.

Juan Alvarado, president of the Ancud Tourism Association (ATA), stated that the casino’s construction would represent the most significant private investment in the last 20 years, positively impacting employment in the region.

Alvarado emphasized that increased employment would be “super positive” for the community, as the seafood processing industry is currently the primary employer for young people and adults. He cited the Osorno casino as an example, noting the job creation during both its construction and operation. “The impact on the Ancud community could be very positive,” he said.

Key Perspectives

Andrés Ojeda, the Mayor of Ancud, shared his optimism: “We are fulfilling our commitment to promote private investment in our community, focusing on the development of services and tourism.”

Gastón Cárcamo, president of the Ancud Chamber of Commerce and Tourism, believes the casino could transform the city into “a focal point of interest” through events and other commercial ventures.

“If we want to become a tourist city and a city of events, a casino will undoubtedly support this vision. A casino brings shows, which attracts many people,” he explained.

He pointed to the existing casino in Chiloé, operated by Enjoy, as an example of how such a development can lead to the growth of smaller hotels and hostels.

Luis Cárdenas, the Regional Secretary Ministerial of Economy, Development, and Tourism of Los Lagos, stated that casinos not only enhance a community’s tourism offerings but also generate a tangible impact on the local economy.

“If there were such an initiative in a community like Ancud in the future, it would be a bet with enormous potential, but it requires serious work and commitment. This project […] could transform Ancud into a hub of tourism and economic development,” he asserted.

Cárdenas also highlighted the potential for increased municipal revenue through casino taxes. “Everything must be done with rigorous technical studies and a clear plan that guarantees real benefits for our residents,” he concluded.
