Serious System Error at Norwegian Gambling Authority

A serious system error at the Lotteri- og stiftelsestilsynet (Norwegian Gambling Authority) has resulted in no tips being received through the tip form for over a year. According to the Norwegian regulator, important tips may not have been received since March of last year due to the system error.

The Lotteri- og stiftelsestilsynet discovered the system error in its tip form in June of this year. The Norwegian regulator’s investigation revealed that the system error had existed since March 2024, potentially causing hundreds of tips to go unreceived.

Atle Hamar, director of the Norwegian regulator, stated in the announcement that they are concerned that they may have missed important tips. He urges people to resubmit their tips now that the system error has been discovered and fixed.

“We are dependent on tips from the public, and people must be able to trust that the tips they send reach us. This is a serious error, and it took far too long for us to discover it.”

At the Lotteri- og stiftelsestilsynet, people can share tips about illegal gambling, as well as about foundations, subsidies to volunteer organizations, and legal online gambling. These tips normally come in via email, the contact form, telephone, and the tip form. The latter is the only option that allows the tipster to remain anonymous.

The Norwegian regulator also stated that they were able to recover 120 tips from the past two months, but the remaining tips were automatically deleted due to privacy regulations.

“This means that we may have lost several hundred tips, but we do not have exact figures. We will thoroughly investigate this and make the necessary changes to prevent this from happening again.”

System Error at Provider

Earlier this year, the Lotteri- og stiftelsestilsynet imposed a significant fine due to a system error at the sole legal provider for lotteries, casino games, and sports betting: Norsk Tipping.

The Norwegian state-owned company received a fine of up to 36 million Norwegian Kroner (€3 million) because, due to a serious error in the system, players could not exclude themselves from accessing the mobile app of the legal online casino for a period of four months.
