Viña del Mar Councilors Seek Special Commission Following Casino Operator’s Exit
A group of councilors in Viña del Mar has submitted a request to establish a special commission dedicated to addressing the situation surrounding the local casino. This follows Enjoy’s announcement of its decision to relinquish its operating permit.
Several councilors have expressed concern over Enjoy’s request, warning of the potential economic impact on municipal coffers. It is estimated that the casino generates approximately CLP 22,000 million (USD 22 million) annually, which is divided between the Regional Government of Valparaíso and the Municipality of Viña del Mar.
Councilor Nancy Díaz explained that the Administration and Finance Committee of the Deliberative Council requested the Municipality to create a special commission. This commission would summon Enjoy’s representatives to “explain what is happening” and the potential economic impact on municipal finances, especially considering the company’s statement that they will fulfill their committed municipal contributions and revenues for the next three years.
Councilor Alejandro Aguilera, who currently chairs the Administration and Finance Committee, stated that this situation needs to be addressed “with foresight, to generate different avenues that allow compensating for a potential loss of resources.”
Furthermore, last week, Councilor Antonella Pecchenino also submitted a request for the current casino situation to be addressed.
According to local news outlet BioBioChile, this councilor will preside over the next session, scheduled for Tuesday the 15th, due to an upcoming trip by Mayor Macarena Ripamonti. She indicated that she will ensure the issue is placed on the day’s agenda and that there may be updates regarding a possible special commission.
