Prominent Lawyer Faces Charges Over Undisclosed Poker Winnings

Earlier this year, a globally recognized lawyer was indicted for allegedly failing to report millions in poker winnings. The lawyer is also accused of diverting funds from his law firm to cover poker debts. PokerNews delved into the story of Tom Goldstein, known for his Supreme Court advocacy, and the reported $50 million he won playing poker.

Tom Goldstein argued hundreds of cases before the U.S. Supreme Court and founded the SCOTUS blog. Alongside his prominent legal career, he lectured at prestigious universities. In his free time, he traveled the world to play poker, one of his greatest passions.

The lawyer frequented high-stakes poker cash games around the globe, where swings of millions of dollars were commonplace. He reportedly won over $50 million in just a few sessions.

However, his luck turned sour earlier this year when he was charged with, among other things, failing to report his poker winnings, leading to tax evasion. The 22-count indictment also accuses him of falsifying tax returns, providing false mortgage statements, and using law firm money to pay off personal poker debts.

Between 2016 and 2021, he allegedly spent tens of millions on travel and luxury expenses while underpaying his taxes annually. Goldstein has denied all charges and requested dismissal and evidence exclusion. His trial is scheduled for January 2026. In the meantime, he has retired and sold the SCOTUS blog.
